Today was another full day spent installing instrumentation and setting up the field site in the event of a storm. Of significance was the parsivel that was installed at the field site (Kananaskis Emergency Services), now able to retrieve and record data. The parsivel was tested by simulating a precipitation event, in which a couple of us were gently tossing snow through the parsivel. At the computer end was Dr. Theriault configuring the program to record and log the information needed.
Part of the trailer is now set up as an upper air station thanks to Bruce (EC)! A trial weather balloon was launched at around 4:30 pm local time, however a little tweaking still needs to be done, as the radiosonde could not make contact with the terminal. More instruction on the inflation, release and watching of the radiosonde will be provided through Bruce tomorrow.
Another success was the setup of the photography tent where Ida along with other students will be taking detailed pictures of snow. The ice fishing tent will be used as a shelter from the wind when taking photos. The tent itself is fairly easy to setup, with a "pop-up" design, which is useful as it will be set up and taken apart during every storm.
There is much work yet to be done, however there has been great headway, and things are coming together!
